Northern Ohio District

2012 District Conference

July 27-29, 2012

“In Christ Alone”

Moderator:

Tom Zuercher

Moderator-Elect:

Clyde Fry

50th Northern Ohio District Anniversary 1963-2012

In 1963 the Eastern District and Western District merged into one district. The merger took place at a joint district conference held August 15-18, 1963 with the theme being “Faith of Our Fathers in Tomorrow’s World.” Wendell Tobias was the Conference Manager.

Linda Fry, of the District Historical Committee, welcomes us to share stories and pictures from the life of our congregation during these last 50 years. As in 1963, we remember and celebrate those who came before us who shared the message of Christ with us. They nurtured us in faith and taught us to be Jesus’ disciples. Also as in 1963, we do not remember the past for its sake alone. We remember because the past helps shape the future! We are indeed still building the church that will carry the message of Jesus the Christ to the generations that will come after us.

"IMAGINE THE JOY"

District Conference Report. July 29-31, 2011

My first impression of District Conference (DC) this year was seeing the enthusiasm and "joy" of the district youth as they presented their play, "I Have The Joy." I was pleased and proud to know that Linda Griffith wrote the entire script for the play! The DC moderator, Sherry Vaught, spoke at the Fri evening worship from the scripture of Eph. 3:14-21. She reminded us that "joy" is a choice we make and should be the basis of our lives as Christians, not just a temporary feeling of elation.

"....you, together with all God's people, may have the power to understand how broad and long, how high and deep, is Christ's love. Yes, may you come to know his love -- although it can never be fully known -- and so be completely filled with the very nature of God." Eph. 3:18-19

Viki Myers and I represented Eastwood at the business sessions on Saturday. Business at DC is very basic and much like our church council meetings -- not always exciting, but it is very necessary to the life of the church. Reports were heard from various committees and organizations connected with and working within our district. Here are a few highlights:

Tom Zuercher is the DC moderator for 2012

Minor organizational changes were made to the district constitution.

The 2012 district budget was reviewed.

John Ballinger, District Executive, reported on the disorganization of the Deshler COB.

Recognition of ordained ministers - ministers in the district are recognized for years of ordination (under 50 yrs in increments of 5-10-15 yrs. etc./over 50 yrs. are exact number of years) This year there was one pastor who has been ordained over 70 years! I was very impressed to see the number of years represented by all those recognized ministers.

Camp Inspiration Hills budget and activities reports.

It is always interesting to see the wide variety of displays -- Brethren Press bookstore, SERRV handicrafts from around the world, Heifer International, On Earth Peace, individual church displays and the ever popular silent auction (with many homemade items to bid on). Camp Inspiration Hills would like to remind everyone to attend the Chicken Barbeque on Sept. 17th - all proceeds now go directly to the camp.

This is my second year as delegate so the church will be looking for another delegate. Viki will be delegate again next year. Being delegate is a great way of becoming acquainted with the work of the church in Northern Ohio as well as enjoying the fellowship of other brethren. If you are interested in being a delegate, please see a member of Nominating and Personnel Committee or Viki or me.

Edith Kieffaber, DC delegate

Grab the arms of your spouse and/or friends from Eastwood and plan on going down for part of or all of district conference!

Many enjoy making reservations and staying the entire weekend. Business is only held on Saturday, so it would be a one-day trip if you want to just take in the business meetings. Each evening has special services with invited speakers and performances by the district youth.

There are insight sessions, a conference choir you can join and many activities for young people; Gary will be going down with our youth.

The college offers a wonderful cafeteria of the lower level of the Convocation Center, where the meetings are held. Parking is convenient, right by the center. Dorms are close by if staying overnight.

An exhibit room, next to the meeting hall also presents items for the silent auction. (Last year, I think the proceeds went to Haiti.)

Representing Eastwood in the district this year: Linda Griffith is on the district board. Gary Griffith, and Julie Shives are on the camp administration committee. More information will be forthcoming: conference theme, speakers, etc.
