A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH
 

1927
Church begun by Reverend Medford Neher.
First Sunday school begun on Cooledge Ave with 53 in attendance.


1928

Dedication service for permanent church home.


1929

New addition completed.


1930
Another addition the size of the first one was completed.


1934

Congregation employed full time pastor, Wilmer A Petry.


1937

Lot was purchased at 725 Darrow Rd and a house was moved to that site and rebuilt for the Petries.


1938

Old frame church house was torn down and a new brick building was erected.


 

1953
Plans for the new church addition were made and work was begun.


1954

Reverend Adam H Miller employed as visiting pastor because of the health of Pastor Petrie.
Eastwood quartet began a program on WHKK radio station.


1962

E. Stanley Smith accepted the call to Eastwood.


1969

Reverend L Byron Miller became pastor and served until 1976.


1975

Wilma Troxell was elected our first woman moderator.


1977

June 19th celebrated the Church's 50th year.


1978

Decision made to remodel the sanctuary.
Sunday school classes collected food for Open M and Good Neighbors all year.
Play: "Angels, Please Come to Order."


1979

Work on sanctuary began on January 2nd.
Year of the babies (15 babies born).


1980

WGCF bazaar proceeds refurnish nursery.
Pastor L. Byron Miller retired.
James and Marla Abe become our co-pastors.


1981

Clarence Fyock and Norm Poling help put new ceiling in kitchen.
Woody and Wilma Troxell accept pastorate at Alliance Church of the Brethren.


1983

Celebration Sunday - 257th anniversary of Church of the Brethren.


1984

Sent 700 pounds of clothing on Church World Service track.


1985

Drama workshop by Covenant Players.
Play: "Walk to Emmaus"

Play: "The Calling."


1987

Play: "Alice in Blunderland", a musical.
Dedicated Peace pole.


1989
Play: "Where He Lies."


1990
Wednesday evening Fellowship Hour instituted.
Plays:
"Follow the Star"
"Walk to Emmaus"
(total of 40+ people involved).

 

1997, May 18 (Pentecost) Ground Breaking for new addition.


2001

The Church moves into the twenty-first century introducing the Eastwood Church of the Brethren web page - Dick Turner Webmaster.


2002

July 28
Celebration Sunday - 75th anniversary of Eastwood Church of the Brethren.
After 21 years of pastoral service, Marla Abe submits her resignation.


2002

August
Paul Markland from the Christians Helping Christians ministry assumes the duties of Interim Pastor.


2003

March, Paul Markland is elected to the position of Pastor;
Annual Conference, Boise, ID (Edith Kieffaber, delegate); Missions trip to New Windsor in October

 

2004

Construction to refinish basement begins-April;

Annual Conference, Charleston WV (Gary Lorenz, delegate);

Basement project finished in September.


2005

January 9 Paul Markland ordained in the Church of the Brethren;
June, VBS; Annual Conference, Peoria, IL, (Richard Tobias, delegate);

Basketball camp in August; Second Missions Trip to New Windsor in Sept.

 

2006

Kidds Club begins in January; Annual Conference, DesMoines Iowa (Larry Petry, Delegate); VBS in August; Basketball Camp, August; Softball Champions, August; Missions Conference in October

 

2007

Free Meals begin in March; Annual Conference, Cleveland, (Cathy Richards, Delegate); VBS in July; Movie Night begins in October

 

2008

New Church website (eastwoodchurch.net) started in January; COB 300th Anniversary in June; Annual Conference, Richmond, VA, (Richard Tobias, delegate); Missions trip to New Orleans in August; celebrate 300th anniversary in November.

 

2009

Licensure service for Gary Lorenz in May; Annual Conference, San Diego, CA (no delegate); Alice and Lary Petry received award, VBS in July, Peace Month in September

 

2010

Property purchased for expansion of parking lot in March; Mortgage Reduction paid off in May; Annual Conference, Pittsburgh, (Richard Tobias, delegate); VBS in July; Mortgage Reduction Celebration in August; Peace Month in September.
