Disaster Relief Take time and look at the Brethren Disaster Ministries website. BDM has started a new project in Marshall County, AL on Nov. 28, based in the town of Arab.
There is a great need for disaster relief health kits, clean-up buckets, school bags, and baby kits. For directions on kits go to: www.churchworldservice.org/site/PageServer?pagename=kits_main, or talk with Alice and Larry Petry, our local representatives. Also, you can contact: District Disaster Coordinators-Mort Curie and Brenda Hostetler, Hjbrenda@aol.com http://www.brethren.org/site/PageServer?pagename=BDM

New project site in Alabama, changes in Tennessee
Jane Yount November 30, 2011
A violent tornado outbreak swept through northeastern Alabama on
April 27, 2011, leaving a widespread trail of destruction. Known as the
“2011 Super Outbreak,” this brutal storm system spawned 336 tornadoes
that ripped through 21 states from Texas to New England and claimed 346
lives. The tornado that struck the Arab, Ala. area was rated an EF4
(winds up to 200 mph) and was on the ground for 50 miles. Many homes
were swept off their foundations.
Brethren Disaster Ministries has set up a repair and rebuilding
project in Arab that became active on November 28, 2011. Volunteer teams
are replacing roofs, making repairs, and completely rebuilding homes
that were destroyed.
Volunteer housing for this project is in a large converted building
in town. The facility has ample space for up to 15 volunteers. Meals are
prepared in a fully equipped kitchen and shared in the dining area.
This is BDM’s second response in this small town. The program had served in Arab following a tornado in 1995.
BDM’s flood recovery project in Ashland City, Tenn. is expected to
continue at least through March 2012, due to the volume of cases still
needing assistance with home repair and rebuilding. Working closely with
the Cheatham County Long Term Recovery Committee, BDM is in the process
of completing our third new build, plans to take on two more new
builds, and has repaired 14 other homes.
BDM began serving the needs of flood-affected residents in Cheatham
County in January 2011. To date more than 3,500 volunteer work days have
been given by BDM volunteers serving the needs in this area.
Meanwhile, BDM has closed the nearby Brentwood (Bellevue), TN project
and has shifted tools and equipment over to the new site in Alabama.

Eastwood Workcamp Experience, 2010
|
How do you beat the winter blues? Volunteer! That’s exactly what a group from Akron Eastwood Church of the Brethren did in early February. The group volunteered for Brethren Disaster Ministries in the area of Ashland City, Tennessee. Edith Kieffaber, Norma Vincent, Debbie and Dale Brown, Debbie and Dave Hajba and Julie and Jim Shives made up the team of volunteers. The homes in this area were affected by the floods that occurred in 2010. We joined Project Directors, Alice and Larry Petry also from Eastwood for a week of fellowship and work.
Our members were divided into two work groups. The first group did site clean-up from the previous week’s demolition of a mobile home and then painting the interior of a home that had been worked on by previous volunteers. The second group went to a home that was gutted to start new wiring, plumbing and rough carpentry.
During the week, the weather hampered our work on the sites for a couple of days. So, our attention turned towards the place where we were staying. Lots of painting, cleaning, electrical work, and plumbing projects were completed.
What was the best part of our experience? For me, it was meeting William. He was the homeowner of the house that was completely gutted. His home was on the back waters of the Cumberland River. The water rose over a five foot bank and filled his house with seven feet of water and sludge. He showed us the water marks on his windows as the water receded. At first, he wasn’t too sure of us and our abilities. But as the week progressed, William began to realize that he would be able to return to his home and soon! The group also met Pam. She came and spoke to us one evening of what happened that fateful night. Pam was initially told that the water would rise about one foot. So, she spent Saturday evening putting household items up so the water wouldn’t damage them. By Sunday morning, the water rose 17 feet and the current was so swift that it moved her house off of its foundation. Building Pam a new home will be a project for future BDM teams.
Seeds were planted that week. Homeowners truly appreciated us taking our time to come and help them. Even in Pam’s case, she wants to volunteer too! She’s been touched by the willingness of volunteers to give of their time to help a complete stranger. I didn’t think of us as strangers, I believe that she was a neighbor that we hadn’t met yet and we are all called to help our neighbors in need.
I left that week tired but fulfilled seeing all that was accomplished by our group.
So, if you ever get an opportunity or a desire to help someone in need, consider giving your time to Brethren Disaster Ministries. You’ll walk away with a sense of accomplishment and getting an opportunity to meet more neighbors. (written by Julie Shives)
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39

Children Disaster Kits: The Kitchen Class collected $410 from the pumpkin pie sale in 2010. These funds, together with other donations, were used to fill a suitcase with supplies for disaster kits for children. Joy Croston has been trained to deal with children affected by disaster. Any additional funds were used to make 23 health care kits, 8 baby care kits and 11 school kits. The kits will be taken to New Windsor in the near future. Thank you to all who helped! Debbie Brown
Please see the bulletin board for a list of needed items to prepare kits to be given to children when they are affected by disaster. Please support this important ministry and sharing of God's love.

Workcamps We schedule regular work camps for adults, young adults, youth, junior high, mixed generations, and women. Most recently our college-age youth went to New Orleans to help rebuild homes. Some of our workcamps in recent years have been in Harrisburg, PA where we did building repairs and clothing distribution through a program called Brethren Housing Association. Contact people in our church for disaster relief/work camps are Alice and Larry Petry. They have volunterred their time and efforts in a number of projects over the years. Recently, at Annual Conference, they received an award for their service to the church.
